Primary tabs

The Laboratory of Industrial Chemistry performs fundamental research in the area of heterogeneous catalysis and aims to develop catalysts based on mechanistic insight. The scientific challenge is the elucidation of the reactions on the atomic level and their interplay with the complex surface chemistry of heterogeneous catalysts, which usually consist of many phases and components, often present as nanoparticles or as X-ray amorphous layers.

Selective Ozonolysis of Tetramethylethylene to Acetone using a Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge in Air

While the ozonolysis of tetramethylethylene (TME) has been investigated in detail, studies combining plasma-generated ozone with TME are scarce. Here, we present a feasibility study using a twin-surface dielectric barrier discharge (twin-SDBD) reactor. Two different admixture positions for TME were chosen to achieve both an unhindered and a restricted influence of short-lived reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) by adding TME to the feed and to the reactor effluent, respectively, varying the dissipated power. Acetone, as the major ozonolysis product, was found to be formed preferentially in any covered scenario over CO and CO2, the products of total oxidation. Feeding TME into the reactor effluent resulted in the highly selective formation of acetone due to the absence of RONS.
